McCalls Pattern 8024 Jersey Top

Here is my review of the McCall's Pattern 8024 which claims to be a Easy Pattern. I also used the Janome M100 sewing machine and Janome 6234xl Overlocker.

The pattern was super easy to understand however as someone that is tall there was no suggested option to lengthen the sleeve so I had to improvise and recreate the cuff myself which I found to be very successful.

The stitch I used for the seams was the lightening stitch which is found on all computerised Janome models. You just have to be careful as like with the M100 it only has that lightening stitch function with a far left needle placement, meaning you need to adjust the seam marker by 5mm less i.e. if you need a 15mm seam allowance follow the 10mm line. I also highly recommend you do a sample of the zigzag density as I found the preset of 1mm was too tight and I used the 2mm zigzag which didn't pucker my jersey nearly as much and then I was able to pressed flat with a steam iron.

With the viscose jersey I found it was vital that when I stretch the cuffs and the neckline into the place to tack them into place as the pins just kept falling out when the jersey stretched. I always recommend using a contrast thread to make removing them easier after sewing your final seam line.

The features I really enjoyed using that my 230DC equivalent machine doesn't have is the automatic bobbin function (see videos on my Facebook page) and the thread cutter as I saved a lot of thread in-between seams which was very useful considering the lightening stitch uses more thread than a normal straight stitch.

I personally believe unless you are bagging it out with a full lining I couldn't achieve the professional standards I'm used to having with high-street clothing and as a busy single mum I don't have time to trim the seams every time I wash my creation. This is my trusted machine and I wouldn't be without an overlocker and have many tips to cheat time consuming threading!

Overall I'm really happy with the pattern, the only downside was the the bottom edge which was a lot looser than I hoped. So, when I make it again, I will keep the fullness in the sleeve but reduce the bottom edge width.
